World Cup Fever

Question: if you had the choice of watching this year’s world cup from anywhere in the world, where would you choose?

For me the answer is clear – Kigali. I cannot explain the atmosphere here over the past few weeks as World Cup fever has hit almost everyone in Kigali. The beauty of being somewhere like Kigali, and not in South Africa itself, is that the ratio of vuvuzelas to people (my apologies for the spelling) is weighted well and truly in favour of the people. I cannot describe to you just how loud one of those horns is, particularly when it is being blown with full force in a small space. One can only imagine the frustration, and permanent hearing loss, suffered by those who are sitting in the stadiums listening to thousands of them at once.

In Kigali, the place to be when it is a World Cup match, is Car Wash bar and grill. Not only do they do the BEST goat brochette (bbq’ed goat meat and onion on a kebab stick – yes vegetarianism is well and truly out the door for me, at least when it comes to these little beauties), they also have a blown-up movie screen which plays the matches in living colour. On the inside/outside part of the restaurant are heaps of plastic picnic tables, complete with legs which fall off if you look at them the wrong way, and what feels like hundreds of screaming fans from all walks of life. Last night was the Ghana vs Uruguay match. Now that was excitement times a thousand. To anyone watching the revelry when Ghana scored a goal, it would seem that half of the people in the bar had personally had a hand in putting the ball into the net. Sadly though, when it came to the penalty shoot-out, luck was not on Ghana’s (or rather the African Continent’s) side. Silence ensued and an air of sadness and gloom descended upon the crowd. Nevermind, today is Germany vs Argentina and I am confident my adopted country will prevail (Germany that is). Schland, oh schland....you have to youtube the video clip to this fab fan hit!

Fingers and toes crossed....
